Leeds Eye Another Striker Despite Piroe’s Impressive Pre-Season
Leeds United remain in the market for another striker this summer, even after securing Lukas Nmecha on a free transfer from Wolfsburg. With Patrick Bamford no longer part of Daniel Farke’s plans and Mateo Joseph pushing for an exit before the transfer deadline, the club is looking to bolster its attacking options.
One bright spot ahead of the new campaign has been the sharp form of Joel Piroe. The Dutch striker, who claimed the Championship Golden Boot last season, has netted four goals during pre-season, including one against Villarreal last weekend. Piroe appears to be the frontrunner to lead the line when Leeds face Everton on the opening weekend.
Speaking about Piroe’s chances of stepping up to the Premier League, Farke said:
“It’s on him to prove he can make a real impact at this level. He’s never played in the Premier League before, so I can’t promise anything—it’s down to performance. But he’s returned in great shape, with solid endurance, and has worked hard this summer.
“He’s shown against teams like Manchester United and Villarreal that he’s competitive. Of course, pre-season is one thing—he’ll need to deliver when the real matches start. But he has our full backing, and we hope he can replicate last season’s form. I won’t predict 20 goals, but the sky’s the limit.”
Despite Piroe’s promise, Leeds continue to pursue another proven forward—and their top summer target has been Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz. However, a deal with the London club has yet to materialize.
In the meantime, Leeds have now turned their attention to another familiar name.
Leeds Join Race for £26m Aleksandar Mitrovic
According to reporter Sebastien Vidal, Leeds are now “in the race” to sign Aleksandar Mitrovic from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. The 30-year-old Serbian international, who reportedly earns £22 million per year, is available for a transfer fee of around £26 million.
“Al Hilal are open to selling Mitrovic for £26 million and Leeds have entered the race. Tottenham are no longer the only club pursuing the striker.”
Mitrovic is no stranger to English football fans, having enjoyed goal-scoring spells in both the Premier League and Championship with Fulham. Leeds supporters will remember him well—he’s scored five goals against the Whites in his career, including three at Elland Road.
While Mitrovic would bring experience and physicality to the Leeds attack, his hefty wages and transfer fee could be a significant obstacle in getting a deal done.
