As the Minnesota Vikings prepare for a new season, optimism is high for a return to the postseason. The team impressed last year but ultimately fell short, bowing out in the Wild Card round to the Los Angeles Rams.
This offseason brought major changes, including the departure of quarterback Sam Darnold in free agency. While the Vikings hoped to retain him, Darnold accepted a can’t-miss offer from the Seattle Seahawks.
With Darnold gone, second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy steps into the starting role. McCarthy missed his entire rookie season after tearing his meniscus in the preseason but is now healthy and expected to play in the Vikings’ preseason opener. All signs point to him being ready for Week 1.
The former Michigan standout has big shoes to fill following Darnold’s solid campaign. While McCarthy is technically a rookie in terms of on-field experience, the Vikings don’t have the luxury of a slow development curve — they’re in win-now mode, and all eyes will be on how quickly he can adjust.
Kevin O’Connell’s system should help ease McCarthy’s transition, but the pressure is on. Adding veteran leadership around him could help lighten the load.
Carson Wentz Signs With the Minnesota Vikings
Currently, Sam Howell is listed as McCarthy’s backup, but Minnesota may want to bolster the quarterback room. Enter Carson Wentz, a seasoned veteran who understands the weight of leading a franchise.
Still a free agent, Wentz spent last season backing up Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City. While his days as a full-time starter might be behind him, Wentz could serve as a high-level backup — and an ideal mentor for McCarthy.
He also brings insurance. Should McCarthy suffer a setback or injury, Wentz could keep the Vikings competitive in the NFC. Compared to Howell, Wentz might offer more stability and experience at this stage of his career.
A Familiar Face in the QB Room
There’s also a built-in connection: Vikings QB coach Josh McCown played alongside Wentz in Philadelphia. McCown has spoken highly of Wentz, calling him a smart, adaptable player with excellent football instincts and improvisational skill.
Bringing Wentz into the fold could be a savvy move. He offers mentorship, a strong locker room presence, and proven experience — all of which could prove invaluable as McCarthy navigates his first full NFL season.
