DEPARTURE NEWS JUST IN: From claret and blue pride to black-and-white flight — Aston Villa’s talisman packs his bags for Tyneside in a blockbuster deal that shakes the Premier League chessboard.

Newcastle United are on the brink of sealing a £40m move for Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey.

BBC Sport revealed on Wednesday that the two clubs were in advanced negotiations, and they have now reached an agreement in principle, with only final details to be settled. Once confirmed, Ramsey will undergo a medical and complete the switch to St James’ Park.

The 24-year-old, who made his Villa debut in 2019, has scored 17 goals in 167 appearances and was a mainstay under Unai Emery last season. A former England Under-21 international, Ramsey will face his new teammates immediately — Newcastle travel to Villa Park for the Premier League opener at 12:30 BST on Saturday.

His arrival follows Newcastle’s permanent signings of winger Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest and defender Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, as well as England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on loan from Southampton.

After a summer of setbacks, Eddie Howe’s side have moved swiftly this week, adding as many first-team players in days as they managed in the first two months of the window. Ramsey’s youth, athleticism, and top-flight experience make him an ideal replacement for the departed Sean Longstaff and a player ready to step up in both the Premier League and Champions League.
