The New York Knicks’ next move is widely expected to be their final free agency signing. After locking in several desirable bench pieces in early July, they’re now looking to round out the rotation with one more addition.
Ben Simmons has been one of the most talked-about free agents over the past month — a versatile, defensive-minded, pass-first forward who could serve as a multi-position utility option off the bench. But his recent track record has raised doubts about his fit on a contender. While the Knicks remain interested, they’re also exploring alternatives as Simmons weighs his options and considers multiple suitors.
SNY’s Ian Begley pointed to Landry Shamet as the frontrunner for the team’s last veteran-minimum contract but didn’t dismiss the Simmons chatter. He noted that bringing in both would require a trade to clear a roster spot, as the Knicks would need to move a player with a guaranteed deal.
Trade activity hasn’t been a major storyline this offseason, with the Knicks focused on keeping their core intact — including recently extending Mikal Bridges. Any potential swap would likely be about creating cap space rather than targeting a specific player.
NBA analyst Keith Smith added that the Knicks face a choice: continue developing young prospect Pacôme Dadiet or push for another veteran presence like Simmons. With no young player clearly ready to crack the veteran-heavy rotation, pairing Simmons with Shamet could be a strong way to close out free agency — provided the cost doesn’t include a prized former first-rounder.
