Andrés Reyes’ header early in the second half secured a 1-0 victory for the New York Red Bulls over Orlando City in the Eastern Conference final of the MLS Cup playoffs on Saturday night.
John Tolkin delivered a pinpoint free kick that set up the decisive moment, propelling the seventh-seeded Red Bulls to an improbable run to the MLS Cup final. New York will make its second-ever appearance in the championship match, aiming to improve on its runner-up finish to the Columbus Crew in 2008.
The Red Bulls will take on either the LA Galaxy or Seattle Sounders next weekend for the title. The Galaxy and Sounders were set to clash later Saturday night.
Carlos Coronel recorded his third postseason shutout with three crucial saves for New York, bringing his total to 17 stops in the playoffs.
Orlando, the fourth seed, fell short in its bid to reach its first MLS Cup final in the club’s 10th season. Goalkeeper Pedro Gallese did not record a save for the hosts.
Reyes broke the deadlock just two minutes into the second half with a perfectly executed set piece. Tolkin’s cross from the right flank arrived at an ideal height and pace for Reyes to meet near the back post. Reyes directed his header off the inside of the upright and into the net, leaving Gallese helpless.
Despite dominating possession after conceding, Orlando struggled to create significant chances against Coronel. Their best opportunity came in the 32nd minute when Martín Ojeda broke down the right wing and found Facundo Torres with a cross-field pass. Torres’ shot was denied by Coronel, preserving the shutout.
