Marc Guehi’s long-rumoured switch to Liverpool dramatically collapsed on deadline day (1 September), despite weeks of speculation about his future.
Crystal Palace had struck a £35million agreement to sell their captain, but the move fell through after Oliver Glasner’s side failed to secure a replacement in time. Guehi, whose deal runs until June 2026, will now remain at Selhurst Park at least until January.
According to Football Insider (6 September), Liverpool are willing to bide their time and wait until next summer, even though foreign clubs can approach the 25-year-old from January to arrange a pre-contract agreement. Bayern Munich have also joined the race, with Real Madrid and Juventus reportedly monitoring the England international.
Palace would owe Chelsea 20% of any transfer fee if they decide to cash in this winter.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson claimed Liverpool may have underestimated Guehi’s value:
“Some Liverpool fans don’t agree with me, but I think their summer was almost perfect. They played the market really well — apart from Guehi. £35million was a fair price, and if they’d just added another £10million, the deal probably gets done. Sometimes clubs pay a premium to get their man, like Madrid did with Alexander-Arnold. Liverpool might have overplayed this one.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool splashed out more than £446million this summer under Arne Slot, with major arrivals including Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and others.
The Reds return to action against Burnley on 14 September after the international break.
