Rangers Managerial Search Hits Another Setback as Danny Rohl Declines Offer
Rangers have suffered another blow in their ongoing search for a new manager, with former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl rejecting the club’s approach amid continued uncertainty over Steven Gerrard’s availability. The Ibrox side are looking for a replacement following the departure of Russell Martin, who was relieved of his duties after a disastrous start to the 2025-26 season. Gerrard had briefly emerged as a frontrunner for the position but withdrew from the race, though his name has resurfaced in recent reports.
Rangers Seek New Head Coach
Martin’s tenure at Rangers ended just months after his summer appointment. Initially praised for his ball-playing philosophy, he struggled to deliver results, leaving the club with only one win from their first seven Scottish Premiership games. Rangers now sit eighth in the table, 11 points behind leaders Hearts and nine behind rivals Celtic.
Following Martin’s exit, the club has been actively exploring potential managerial candidates. Reports last week suggested that Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard might make a sensational return to Ibrox, where he previously won a league title and earned strong fan support. Gerrard even traveled from the Middle East to hold talks with club officials but ultimately withdrew, citing that the timing was not right for a return to management.
Rohl Turns Down Rangers’ Approach
Rangers also considered Danny Rohl, the former Sheffield Wednesday manager, for the role. The 36-year-old was approached and engaged in discussions with the club, but, according to Florian Plettenberg, he has declined the offer. Rohl reportedly feels that the timing is not right for him to take on the challenge, citing reasons similar to Gerrard’s — reluctance to return to management following a difficult period at Championship level.
Gerrard’s Situation Remains Unclear
Despite ruling himself out recently, Gerrard’s name has once again been linked with the Ibrox job. The Sun reported that bookmakers have installed him as a favourite for a second stint at Rangers, with odds reaching evens at William Hill. However, Gerrard has since returned to Bahrain, making his actual candidacy uncertain.
Rangers Target Sean Dyche
In the wake of Rohl’s rejection, Rangers have reportedly tabled a club-record offer for former Everton and Burnley manager Sean Dyche, according to journalist Luca Chianti. The 54-year-old, out of work since January 2025, is said to be considering the bid. His appointment would represent a significant coup for a Scottish club, given his Premier League experience.
Other Candidates Under Consideration
Rangers are also exploring other options. Former club star Kevin Muscat, who spent much of his managerial career in Asia, is reportedly a strong candidate. Other potential choices include Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna, former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and his assistant Michael Carrick.
The club is eager to appoint a new head coach before the international break ends, aiming to have leadership in place for their next Scottish Premiership fixture against Dundee United.
