Jamarra Ugle-Hagan has expressed regret over how his time at the Western Bulldogs concluded after officially moving to Gold Coast. The Bulldogs received pick 74 in return for the former No.1 draft pick, who was still contracted for next year.
Ugle-Hagan’s career has faced a crossroads after more than a year of serious off-field challenges. The 23-year-old didn’t play at any level this season, spending extended periods away from the club. His uncertain future became a recurring issue for the Bulldogs, with coach Luke Beveridge addressing it almost weekly.
Following the trade, Ugle-Hagan posted on social media: “Good things to come from here.” He added, “Though it didn’t end the way I would have liked, I have nothing but gratitude and respect for the Doggies. My time at the Kennel had its lows, but the memories and friendships will stay with me for life. From a shy 15-year-old who moved to Melbourne, the Doggies took me in and gave me a family and a home. For that, they’ll always hold a special place in my heart. Part of me wishes things had ended differently, but I leave proud to have worn the red, white, and blue. Thank you to all my teammates, coaches, and staff—I’m forever grateful.”
Ugle-Hagan kicked 103 goals from 67 games after debuting in 2021. His last appearance was in the 2024 elimination final, a game the Bulldogs nearly withdrew him from.
Despite the setbacks, his potential remains significant, and he could slot into a forward line alongside Ben King at the Suns. “We’re looking forward to giving Jamarra a second chance,” Suns list boss Craig Cameron said. “We’ve committed to him. Now he needs to commit to the program and give himself every chance to continue his footy.”
Cameron noted that living with former Suns player Jarrod Harbrow could help the Indigenous talent regain form. “We’ve put a few things in place to get him back to condition so he can complete a full pre-season. We’re excited to have him on board, but it’s now up to Jamarra to take this opportunity.”
The Bulldogs wished Ugle-Hagan well, but also clarified their position: “Today’s trade means the Bulldogs’ contractual relationship with Ugle-Hagan ends and no ongoing obligations exist.”
