Javi Gracia believes Watford’s dominant win over Middlesbrough shows they are capable of challenging for promotion this season.
The Hornets climbed to tenth in the Championship table following their 3-0 victory, just four points off the playoff spots. The result continues a period of steady progress under Gracia, who replaced Paulo Pezzolano after ten games of a mixed start to the campaign.
While Watford’s home form has been strong, their away record remains an area of concern. Gracia hopes the clean sheet against Middlesbrough — their first of the season — can provide the foundation for greater consistency on the road. The Spaniard felt the display proved his side can compete with the league’s best.
Gracia said: “We don’t feel inferior to anyone. In every game you have to show who you are and compete with everything you have. I believe we have a good squad, not just good individuals. If we keep fighting for each other, we can achieve something special.”
For Middlesbrough, the defeat meant a missed opportunity to close the gap on the top six after Coventry City’s first loss of the season at Wrexham. Despite dominating possession, Boro lacked a cutting edge and were punished twice on the counter before Watford’s controversial third goal early in the second half put the game beyond reach.
Reflecting on the performance, Gracia added: “This was exactly the response we needed. Middlesbrough controlled the early stages, but even when we had to defend deeper than planned, we stayed compact and limited their chances to crosses and long shots. Once we grew into the game, we took control, created more, and scored three fantastic goals. Every player was outstanding.”
He continued: “All of the goals were excellent, but what pleased me most was the team’s attitude and hunger. To compete with the top sides, you need balance — players who are committed both in attack and defence. It’s not only about the defenders or the goalkeeper; it’s about everyone working together. Today, we showed that unity.”
