August proved to be a frustrating month for Leeds United in the transfer market, with several top attacking targets slipping away and the club forced to turn to backup options.
However, in Noah Okafor, Leeds appear to have found a gem. The winger’s move from AC Milan looks an inspired piece of business, and his influence could prove vital in the club’s push for Premier League survival.
Okafor has yet to be recalled to the Switzerland squad following another international omission. From a Leeds perspective, that may not be the worst outcome — given his injury record, keeping him fit in West Yorkshire is a clear priority.
Still, the absence underlines a deeper issue between Okafor and Swiss boss Murat Yakin. Speaking to The Athletic earlier in the season, Okafor opened up about the situation:
“It hurts to hear and read that I supposedly didn’t have a good attitude,” he said. “They’re denying my character and suggesting I didn’t give my all. Now it’s a bit of a problem with the coach.
I don’t want to dwell on it. I know my qualities, I know where I’m headed, and I’m ready.”
Despite leaving Okafor out again for November, with Isaac Schmidt preferred, Yakin has acknowledged the winger’s form at Leeds. Switzerland’s strong qualifying campaign — three wins and a draw from four games, nine goals scored and none conceded — means the coach hasn’t felt pressure to change a winning side.
Yakin told Swiss outlet Watson:
“I’ve spoken with Okafor repeatedly about what I expect from him on and off the pitch. I hope my words get through to him. We’ll keep monitoring him. For attacking players, goals are the key metric, and those currently in the squad have an edge in that regard.”
But focusing solely on goals undervalues Okafor’s impact at Leeds. His direct running, confidence in one-on-one situations, and creativity from the left flank have been major assets for Daniel Farke’s side.
If Yakin is only judging numbers, he’s missing the bigger picture. Okafor’s performances have shown he offers far more than finishing alone — and with months still to go before the 2026 World Cup, he has time to play himself back into contention.
At Leeds, he’s certainly making the right impression.
