Javi Gracia explained that his switch to a back three in Friday’s 1-1 draw with Bristol City was made to suit the players who were in the best physical condition.
Having relied on a back four since taking charge, Gracia made the tactical change after another quick three-day turnaround between matches. Max Alleyne was handed his first start under the Spaniard, while regular right-back Jeremy Ngakia was given a rest due to fatigue.
“We tried to play with the players in the best condition,” Gracia said. “Ngakia has been playing constantly, so it was important to manage his minutes. Kevin [Keben] was fresh after resting last game, so we looked for new options to bring more energy into the team. We need everyone performing at 100% with the busy schedule we have.”
Gracia admitted his side lost their rhythm and balance after a bright start, struggling with spacing and fluidity going forward. He eventually reverted to a 4-2-3-1 late on, but by then Bristol City were well-organised defensively.
The head coach praised Imran Louza’s “sensational” assist for Marc Bola’s goal but was frustrated to concede soon after from Scott Twine’s free-kick.
“Yes, Egil [Selvik] was disappointed not to save it,” Gracia added. “But we also created many chances and could have scored a second. In football, if you don’t take your moments, you suffer. We need to show our quality in those key situations, and today we didn’t.”
