The Philadelphia Phillies put together a strong 2025 season, but they now face a major challenge with MVP runner-up Kyle Schwarber entering free agency. That leaves the team with a demanding offseason ahead.
According to Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller, Schwarber is still expected to return, but the Phillies would be wise to explore backup options. His top recommendation: New York Mets star Pete Alonso.
“How do you replace one of the four most consistent home run hitters in baseball over the last four seasons? By signing another member of that same group,” Miller explained. He added that bringing in Alonso would allow Bryce Harper to shift back to right field and end Nick Castellanos’ defensive struggles—if Castellanos remains with the team in 2026 at all.
In 2025, Alonso posted a .272/.347/.524/.871 slash line, along with 41 doubles, 38 home runs, and 126 RBIs across 162 games. He offers similar offensive production to Schwarber, while also providing more defensive value, making him an ideal alternative.
The Phillies’ priority will be keeping their core intact, including Schwarber. But if that isn’t possible, securing a long-term deal with a player like Alonso would be a strong fallback plan.
