The Philadelphia Phillies reached the World Series in 2022 but haven’t returned since, which could prompt the front office to consider roster changes.
Alec Bohm drew significant trade buzz at last year’s winter meetings and made the All-Star team in 2024. Although his production dipped this season, he remained a steady contributor. With free agency approaching next year, the Phillies might consider moving him if they pursue an upgrade at third base.
Trading Bohm would leave a hole at third, but he could also help the Phillies address a major need. Philadelphia is in the market for a productive outfielder, and ESPN’s Eric Karabell suggested a deal with the Boston Red Sox that would send Bohm to Boston in exchange for Jarren Duran.
Karabell noted that both players are coming off down years and might benefit from a fresh start. He wrote that the Red Sox could use help at third base, and while Bohm isn’t on the level of Alex Bregman, he remains a reliable hitter and defender. Such a trade would allow the Phillies to pursue a more consistent third baseman who fits well in Philadelphia, while Duran would satisfy their need in center field and open room in Boston’s crowded outfield. As Karabell put it, a move like this could work for both sides.
If Bregman departs, Boston could still turn to Marcelo Mayer at third base. But with Duran stuck in an outfield logjam—and carrying strong value as the 2024 All-Star Game MVP—the Red Sox could benefit from acquiring Bohm for a season while Mayer settles in, especially if a prospect is included.
Duran, under team control through 2028, would represent a significant upgrade for Philadelphia. He led the American League in triples last season and posted a .774 OPS. Meanwhile, Boston would ease its outfield crowding and gain a potential trade deadline asset in Bohm.
