The Boston Red Sox are in an excellent position, with a strong roster and the best farm system in the league, even after trading several prospects to acquire Garrett Crochet. This deep farm system enables them to make major trades to further strengthen their major league team. One area they are likely to target for improvement is their pitching rotation.
Bleacher Report’s key man recently predicted that the Red Sox will make another big trade this winter, possibly for Seattle Mariners pitcher Luis Castillo. Rymer noted that Castillo’s fastball has been one of the most valuable pitches in baseball over the past two seasons and that he has been durable, making at least 30 starts in five of his eight major league seasons. Despite $72.5 million remaining on his contract, Castillo could still fetch a high-quality bat for Seattle, especially if they are willing to cover part of his contract.
If the Mariners are open to covering some of Castillo’s salary, the trade could be relatively straightforward. Red Sox infielder Triston Casas would be a logical target for Seattle, with additional prospects exchanged based on the contract details. Boston has considered moving Rafael Devers to first base, which would create a logjam with Casas, and they are currently pursuing upgrades at third base. Trading Casas could make sense if it helps them land an ace like Castillo.
For Seattle, acquiring a young player like Casas, who has significant potential, would be a valuable addition, particularly as they seek offensive upgrades at the corner infield positions.
