The Indianapolis Colts might have an open quarterback battle on their hands, but there’s no question about who will protect the blind side of whoever wins the job.
On Tuesday, the Colts announced they’ve signed left tackle Bernhard Raimann to a four-year, $100 million contract extension — solidifying one of the most critical spots on their offensive line.
Raimann, a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Central Michigan, was entering the final year of his rookie deal. Instead of waiting, the Colts locked him up early, rewarding his standout performance.
With both Anthony Richardson and free-agent addition Daniel Jones competing for the Week 1 start against the Dolphins on September 7, Raimann will be responsible for anchoring the left side — protecting the blind side of either right-handed quarterback.
Raimann’s Rise to Elite Status
Despite his mid-round draft status, Raimann has quickly emerged as one of the NFL’s top tackles. According to Pro Football Focus, he ranked 8th out of 140 qualifying tackles last season with an overall grade of 85.1. He also cracked the top 15 in both pass-blocking (82.0) and run-blocking (80.7) grades.
And while the numbers speak volumes, Raimann remains humble and appreciative.
“Just really grateful to be a part of this organization,” Raimann told the team’s official site. “Grateful for the Irsay family and Mr. Ballard. We’ve always wanted to be here — so it’s such a blessing.”
A Leader On and Off the Field
General Manager Chris Ballard praised Raimann not just for his play, but for his leadership and work ethic.
“Bernhard has worked extremely hard, and this contract extension is a testament to his character, dedication and persistence,” Ballard said. “He exemplifies each of our team’s four pillars and is a leader in our locker room.”
With Raimann and three-time Pro Bowl left guard Quenton Nelson forming a dominant left side, the Colts boast a trench duo envied across the league.
Eyes on the Playoffs
Despite the talent, Raimann hasn’t yet experienced postseason football. The Colts haven’t made the playoffs since 2020 or won a playoff game since 2018 — Nelson’s rookie season.
Still, Raimann remains focused on changing that narrative.
“It’s all about the team, all about football,” he said. “Winning some games for the Colts, but also for Indiana. I’m just excited to be doing that.”
The left tackle added that the Indiana Pacers’ inspiring NBA Finals run has motivated players in the Colts locker room.
“Just taking it day by day, trying to make the most of my opportunities,” Raimann said. “I’ve had amazing people supporting me and giving me strength. It’s been about daily improvements — and now we’re just beyond blessed to be here.”
