As you’ve likely heard, the Tennessee Vols have faced some challenges in recruiting transfer portal players this winter. Despite efforts from head coach Josh Heupel and his staff to pursue several playmakers, they’ve only secured two signees so far: wide receiver Amari Jefferson and interior lineman Wendell Moe Jr. However, there’s still time for Tennessee to make a push before spring football begins. With that in mind, here are three players in the portal that the Vols are highly interested in and could potentially add to their roster:
3. **Omari Evans (WR, Penn State)**
Earlier this week, Penn State’s speedy wide receiver Omari Evans announced he would enter the transfer portal. Shortly after, it was revealed that Evans would be taking official visits to Tennessee, Washington, Texas Tech, and Syracuse. All four programs make sense for Evans, especially Tennessee, which is looking to bolster its receiving corps after five wide receivers entered the portal. Heupel is aiming to add experience and depth, and Evans could be a solid addition.
2. **Star Thomas (RB, Duke)**
Star Thomas, a 2022 recruit who took the JUCO route before signing with Duke, had a breakout season with the Blue Devils, rushing for over 800 yards and seven touchdowns. With Tennessee’s running back room filled with young talent but lacking in experience after Dylan Sampson’s departure to the NFL, Thomas could provide the depth and competition needed for the Vols. Could he make an impact in Knoxville and push for a starting role?
1. **Kyndrich Breedlove (CB, Purdue)**
Purdue cornerback Kyndrich Breedlove is a notable player to watch. Although Breedlove initially planned to commit to Arizona State, he decided to visit Tennessee first before finalizing his decision. With Tennessee’s top cornerback Jermod McCoy recovering from a torn ACL, the Vols’ secondary could use a veteran presence. Signing Breedlove would be a significant boost for Heupel and the defensive coaching staff.
