The Baltimore Orioles are facing a crucial offseason ahead. In recent years, they’ve methodically built a strong team, primarily by developing a talented group of young stars. However, for the first time during this rebuild, the Orioles now face the challenge of re-signing key free agents. The most significant player Baltimore is likely to lose is their ace, Corbin Burnes. After a standout season with the Orioles, Burnes is expected to attract significant interest from multiple teams this winter. Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer believes the Orioles won’t be able to keep Burnes and predicts he’ll sign with the New York Mets on a seven-year, $210 million deal.
“While the Orioles won’t be offering Burnes the qualifying offer, it’s still possible he could return,” Rymer wrote. “Along with the Orioles, the San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays are considered in the mix, with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox also in the conversation, according to reports from Heyman and Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe.” The Mets, however, are seen as a likely landing spot for Burnes, given their front office led by former Brewers GM David Stearns and the financial backing of owner Steve Cohen. Even if the Mets secure a deal for Juan Soto first, they would still be strong contenders for Burnes. With Cohen’s willingness to spend, the Mets are expected to be major players in the free-agent market this winter, especially if they miss out on Soto.
