The Chicago Bears must find a way to better protect Caleb Williams.
Chicago drafted its franchise quarterback, and he showed flashes of promise in 2024. However, he also led the league in sacks, going down 68 times for a loss of 466 yards. The Bears can’t afford to let that continue and need to address the issue immediately.
Heading into 2025, Chicago cannot risk having an unreliable offensive line again. Fortunately, Williams avoided serious injury despite taking so many hits, but the more he gets pressured, the greater the danger.
Free agency presents a prime opportunity for the Bears to strengthen their protection. Pro Football Focus’ Zoltán Buday identified Kansas City Chiefs Pro Bowler Trey Smith as an ideal target for Chicago.
“Potential Landing Spot: Chicago Bears,” Buday wrote. “On paper, the Chicago Bears’ offensive line appeared promising entering 2024, but injuries and inconsistency prevented it from reaching its potential. The unit allowed 180 total pressures—including a league-worst 37 sacks—on 682 pass plays, finishing with an 84.1 PFF pass-blocking efficiency rating, ranking just 21st in the NFL.
“Given how Detroit built its offense under new Bears head coach Ben Johnson, reinforcing the offensive line could be his top priority in Chicago. If Smith doesn’t re-sign with Kansas City, he will be one of the most sought-after linemen in free agency. Durability is one of his biggest strengths—he has played the third-most snaps among guards over the past four seasons, and his 78.0 PFF overall grade ranks 10th out of 70 qualifying guards in that span.”
Chicago needs to upgrade its offensive line, and Smith is the best available option. With a projected four-year, $78 million price tag, the Bears shouldn’t hesitate to make the investment—or even offer more.
