The St. Louis Cardinals had a quiet offseason, much to the disappointment of their dedicated fanbase, as they made no significant moves affecting their Major League roster.
The team explored trade possibilities for third baseman Nolan Arenado, but following Alex Bregman’s signing with the Boston Red Sox, it now appears Arenado will at least begin the 2025 season with St. Louis.
However, a trade is still a possibility—just one that might have to wait until the trade deadline.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report predicts that when the time comes, the Cardinals will ultimately trade Arenado to the New York Yankees.
“They were reportedly one of the teams Arenado was willing to waive his no-trade clause for, and there’s a decent chance they’ll be desperate enough to take on the rest of his contract after a few months of trying to platoon Oswaldo Cabrera, DJ LeMahieu, and Oswald Peraza at the hot corner,” Miller speculated.
At the moment, the Yankees are not pursuing Arenado due to his hefty contract. While the Colorado Rockies are covering $10 million, the Cardinals are responsible for $64 million.
St. Louis had hoped to reduce payroll by moving Arenado and create an opportunity at third base for younger players like Nolan Gorman and Thomas Saggese. For now, though, Arenado is set to remain in St. Louis.
If the Cardinals commit to prioritizing their young talent, trading Arenado at the deadline would be a logical move. If the Yankees’ third base situation proves unsteady, they could reconsider their stance on acquiring him.
As the Cardinals look to rebuild for the future, parting with Arenado could be a step in that direction. His early-season performance and market demand will determine if a deal materializes.
