The BYU Cougars are beginning to make significant strides in the transfer portal, attracting serious attention from top-tier players. Since Kevin Young took the helm last year, the program has embraced a mindset of competing among college basketball’s elite. They’ve already landed a major commitment from top prospect AJ Dybantsa and plan to build their future around the five-star standout, often described as a “generational talent.”
Next, BYU is set to host former Georgia guard Silas Demary Jr., a highly sought-after player currently ranked No. 2 in the transfer portal. Demary, previously a four-star recruit, is also considering visits to St. John’s, Duke, and UConn. He’s prioritizing programs with a proven track record of success, which explains his selective shortlist. Young, with his NBA coaching experience, is leveraging his professional connections to assemble a strong staff at BYU.
As it stands, Duke is preparing for a Final Four matchup against Houston, while UConn aims for its third consecutive national championship. St. John’s, led by the rejuvenated Rick Pitino, made a deep tournament run as a No. 2 seed this year. Demary, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound guard from North Carolina, started 69 games at Georgia, averaging 13.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.7 steals per contest.
Meanwhile, BYU’s Egor Demin is weighing his NBA Draft options, projected as a potential lottery pick. Despite their Sweet 16 loss to Alabama, BYU is already busy reloading for the 2025-26 season. Dybantsa turned heads at the recent McDonald’s All-American showcase and is poised to become one of the most impactful recruits in school history. The Cougars have also added Washington transfer Dominique Diomande, an international standout standing 6-foot-8 who’s already drawing NBA attention.
Following the season, three Cougars entered the portal. Kanon Catchings, the nephew of WNBA legend Tamika Catchings, and Elijah Crawford transferred in quick succession. Notably, Kanon has a “do not contact” label on his transfer, suggesting his next destination is already lined up. Dallin Hall has also opted to leave Provo, planning to use his final year of eligibility elsewhere.
