The Boston Red Sox could benefit from adding more balance to their lineup. Specifically, adding some right-handed power could elevate them to one of the top teams in the American League in 2025. While the Red Sox haven’t been serious contenders in recent years, the upcoming season has the potential to change that.
With the American League wide open, Boston’s strong starting rotation gives them a significant edge. The lineup already features several solid players, but it leans heavily on left-handed bats. Bringing in a right-handed power hitter would address this imbalance and strengthen the roster.
Alex Bregman has been a popular topic of speculation, though he hasn’t signed with any team yet. The Red Sox should be preparing backup plans in case they fail to land him. One potential alternative is six-time All-Star JD Martinez. While Martinez offers no defensive value, he remains a strong option, particularly given Boston’s reported plans to give Masataka Yoshida more time in the outfield in 2025. This would free up opportunities at designated hitter, where Martinez could thrive in a platoon role, and he would likely be a more affordable option than Bregman.
Opting for Martinez instead of Bregman could also have other benefits. It would create an opening at second base, allowing young players like Vaughn Grissom or Kristian Campbell to step into a meaningful role right away in 2025, which could pay dividends in the long term.
