Sharpshooting guard Kyan Evans, previously at Colorado State, has officially committed to North Carolina.
“LET’S DO IT!” Evans exclaimed on Instagram as he revealed his decision to head to Chapel Hill. He clearly seems energized about joining one of college basketball’s most storied programs.
His impressive sophomore season with the Rams, paired with a standout performance in the 2025 NCAA tournament, caught the eye of Tar Heels head coach Hubert Davis.
With Evans now in the fold, Davis faces the challenge of making the most out of the situation via the transfer portal. Evans holds the No. 66 spot in On3’s 2025 transfer portal rankings and is rated the 14th-best point guard available. During the 2024–25 season at Colorado State, he averaged 10.6 points, 3.1 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game. From beyond the arc, he proved to be one of the top shooters in the country, connecting on 44.6% of his 4.4 three-point attempts per game. For context, that percentage would rank seventh nationally, but his lower shot volume kept him off the official leaderboards. He also earned a spot on the All-MWC Tournament team.
North Carolina’s backcourt has seen significant turnover: rising junior guard Elliot Cadeau transferred to Michigan in late March, top 2024 recruit Ian Jackson is heading elsewhere (possibly to the NBA), and star guard RJ Davis, the program’s second-leading all-time scorer and former First-Team All-American, has exhausted his college eligibility. All of this paves the way for Evans to step into a major role as Davis works to rebuild the Tar Heels’ once-explosive backcourt.
Transitioning from a standout role at a mid-major to producing at a high-major level is never easy, especially for a smaller guard. But Evans has already shown he can rise to the occasion, leading Colorado State to its first NCAA Tournament win since 2013. In the Rams’ upset of fifth-seeded Memphis, Evans exploded for 23 points on an efficient 7-for-11 shooting, including 6-for-9 from deep. His heroics powered CSU to its biggest moment in over a decade. North Carolina will be counting on him to carry that spark into the 2025–26 season.
If there’s any concern about Evans’ size, it’s worth noting that RJ Davis (6-foot, 160 pounds) — even smaller than Evans at 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds — thrived under Hubert Davis’ guidance. For Evans, this move looks like a perfect fit.
