The New York Knicks’ search for a new head coach has become a major storyline early in the offseason. After parting ways with Tom Thibodeau following their trip to the Eastern Conference Finals, the organization now faces the task of identifying a coach who can help sustain and build upon that recent momentum.
At the same time, New York’s front office must also monitor the free agency market to strengthen their roster. Improving perimeter shooting is a top priority, as the Knicks ranked just 24th in the league in total three-pointers made last season.
In a recent piece for The Athletic, James L. Edwards III suggested that sharpshooter Luke Kennard could be a strong addition.
“Luke Kennard,” Edwards wrote. “The soon-to-be 29-year-old is one of the game’s best shooters and could also serve as a secondary or tertiary playmaker for New York — a role they badly need filled. Over the past five years, Kennard has shot at least 43% from deep while averaging four or more attempts per game. He’s a pure sniper.”
Kennard’s arrival would bring elite floor spacing and some much-needed ballhandling depth. His shooting ability would help open lanes for New York’s driving threats and give them a reliable catch-and-shoot option. Whether the Knicks can create enough cap flexibility to pursue him remains uncertain.
Mike Brown Viewed as Top Coaching Candidate
In the same article, Edwards also named Mike Brown as the most fitting choice to be the Knicks’ next head coach.
“Of all the coaches linked to the Knicks, Mike Brown stands out as the best match for the current roster when considering scheme and philosophy,” Edwards noted. “He developed creative and effective offensive systems in Sacramento, and although roster makeup plays a role, he’s shown the ability to adapt.”
Brown’s coaching resume includes notable stints with the Kings, Cavaliers, and Lakers. If he’s open to taking the job, the Knicks would be smart to bring him on board quickly and focus on shaping a championship-caliber team.
Knicks Reportedly Not Pursuing Kevin Durant
Beyond coaching and roster improvements, Kevin Durant’s potential departure from the Phoenix Suns has generated plenty of buzz. However, according to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, the Knicks have no interest in acquiring the star forward.
“Considering the past — when James Dolan believed KD and Kyrie Irving were coming to the Knicks only for them to choose Brooklyn — and how Durant later dismissed the Knicks as ‘corny’ and uncool, that’s left a bitter taste,” Smith explained on NBA Today on June 17. “So when you hear there’s ‘no interest,’ it’s clear this isn’t just about basketball. There are personal feelings involved.”
While Durant may attract suitors elsewhere, the Knicks appear focused on smaller adjustments rather than a major splash. Their core is already competitive, and players like Kennard represent the kind of smart, targeted moves that could elevate the team further.
