The Pete Alonso free agency race has reportedly narrowed to a handful of teams, with the New York Mets emerging as the frontrunners to re-sign the slugger. However, no deal has been finalized, leaving the door open for other teams to swoop in and lure the “Polar Bear” away from Queens.
Citing a report by Mark Feinsand, FanSided’s Jacob Mountz recently highlighted a new contender in the Alonso sweepstakes: the Toronto Blue Jays. Mountz speculated that the Blue Jays could make a serious push to sign Alonso, whose projected contract value is around $154 million.
“After missing out on both Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes, the Jays have the financial flexibility to land Alonso,” Mountz wrote. “Since breaking Aaron Judge’s rookie home run record with 53 in 2019, Alonso has remained one of baseball’s premier power hitters. While he hasn’t matched that historic season, he’s still recorded three seasons with 40-plus home runs, and his 16 home runs in the shortened 2020 season would project to over 40 across a full schedule.”
Adding Alonso would significantly bolster the Blue Jays’ lineup. Pairing him with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. could create one of the most formidable power duos in the league.
After falling short on big free-agent targets like Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes, Max Fried, and Teoscar Hernández, landing Alonso would be a massive win for Toronto and a strong consolation prize for their offseason efforts.
