The Boston Red Sox have been entertaining trade inquiries for first baseman Triston Casas throughout the offseason, even though they lack a clear long-term replacement for him in 2025 and beyond.
If they were to deal Casas now, the team could sign a free agent or shift Rafael Devers from third base to first. However, none of the available free agents would represent a significant upgrade, and moving Devers to first base may not be the most strategic decision.
That said, the Red Sox might be planning ahead for the 2026 offseason, when Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is set to hit free agency. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the 25-year-old has a genuine interest in playing for Boston.
“If Guerrero doesn’t receive an extension by spring training, he’ll test free agency,” Nightengale reported on Tuesday. “If Guerrero doesn’t return to the Blue Jays, he would love to be with the Red Sox, friends say, which might explain Boston’s hesitancy to aggressively pursue Alex Bregman.”
Guerrero, who signed with Toronto as an international free agent in 2015 and debuted in 2019, has built an impressive resume. He’s been a four-time All-Star, made two All-MLB First Teams, and won two Silver Sluggers and a Gold Glove. Over his career, he’s hit .288 with an .863 OPS, 160 home runs, 507 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases. In 2024, he played 159 games, batting .323 with a .940 OPS, 30 homers, 103 RBIs, and two steals. His power, especially as a right-handed hitter, would be a valuable addition to Boston’s lineup.
However, Guerrero is reportedly seeking a $450 million contract, which would set a new record for the Red Sox. It remains to be seen if Boston is willing to make that level of financial commitment.
