Michigan made an early move in the transfer portal, landing Indiana wide receiver Donaven McCulley, a 6-foot-5 target. However, they haven’t been able to add any other players yet. The Wolverines missed out on a few key targets, such as UConn’s Skyer Bell and Yale’s David Pantelis, who were considered likely additions.
Despite these setbacks, Michigan still has some options on the table. After a disappointing 2024 passing attack, the team is looking to strengthen its receiving corps for 2025. Here are some realistic options:
**Kaedin Robinson (App State) – 6-foot-2, 195 pounds**
Michigan offered Robinson in January, and he remains one of their most realistic options. After transferring from UCF to App State, Robinson had standout seasons, leading his team in 2024 with 53 receptions for 840 yards and two touchdowns. He almost hit 1,000 yards in 2023, with 905 yards and 10 touchdowns. Robinson, a first-team All-Sun Belt selection in 2024, has one year of eligibility left.
**Anthony Simpson (UMass) – 5-foot-10, 180 pounds**
Simpson is a newer target, potentially fitting the slot role for Michigan’s offense. After a limited stint at Arizona, Simpson transferred to UMass in 2023, where he had a breakout season under Michigan’s tight ends coach, Steve Casula. He led UMass with 57 receptions for 792 yards and three touchdowns. Unfortunately, injuries hampered his 2024 season, limiting him to just two games.
**Tru Edwards (Louisiana Tech) – 6-foot-2, 200 pounds**
Edwards is another receiver Michigan has shown interest in. He has one year of eligibility left and has had a unique college journey, playing at Hawaii, JUCO, and most recently at Louisiana Tech. In 2024, he had a breakout season, catching 84 passes for 986 yards and six touchdowns, a major improvement over his 2023 performance.
**Option 4: Wait and See**
There could be more late entries to the portal, especially from teams eliminated from the College Football Playoff, as they have five days to enter the portal after being knocked out. Michigan might also choose to evaluate its current roster in spring ball, where players like Fred Moore could emerge after a strong bowl game, and Semaj Morgan and Kendrick Bell offer potential. Additionally, Michigan added three promising freshmen, with Andrew Marsh leading the charge. With improvements at quarterback from Mikey Keene and Bryce Underwood, the current group of receivers could also see growth.
If Michigan opts to wait, more portal movement is expected in the spring.
