Bill Belichick and the UNC football team have secured a commitment from Smith III, Florida Gator. He will be heading to Chapel Hill with four years of eligibility remaining.
Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 211 pounds, Smith III played in five games during his true freshman season. He recorded five tackles and one pass breakup in limited action, managing to preserve his redshirt year since his fifth game came in the team’s bowl game.
While his stats aren’t groundbreaking, here’s something that stands out: Smith III was named the team’s Most Improved Freshman at the end of the 2024 season.
A former four-star recruit, Smith III becomes the second ex-Gator to transfer to North Carolina, following defensive lineman D’Antre Robinson.
There was speculation during his recruitment process, but it seemed that UNC had the upper hand from the start. Despite strong competition from schools like Purdue and Miami, North Carolina ultimately secured his commitment.
