Atlético Madrid have been forced to rethink their transfer strategy after it became clear that top defensive target Cristian Romero is no longer a viable option. While the Tottenham centre-back had expressed interest in a move to Los Rojiblancos, Spurs have no intention of selling him, and Atlético are unwilling to meet the €70 million price tag. As a result, the Spanish side have shifted focus to other targets.
David Hancko back in consideration
Slovakian international David Hancko, currently at Feyenoord, is once again under consideration. Atlético were previously in talks for him earlier in 2024 but failed to reach an agreement. According to Diario AS, Diego Simeone remains an admirer of the defender, though Juventus and clubs in Saudi Arabia have also shown interest—though Juventus recently signed Pierre Kalulu.
Hincapie remains on the radar
Another familiar name for Atlético fans is Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie. The club pursued him last summer, but negotiations stalled due to Leverkusen’s €40 million-plus valuation. Hincapie is reportedly open to the move.
Alternatives in Serie A and the Premier League
Bologna’s Jhon Lucumí, whose contract runs until 2026, is being monitored and could be available for a relatively low fee. Nottingham Forest’s Murillo is also on Atlético’s shortlist, with scouting reports said to be positive.

According to Cadena SER, the most likely signing may be a name not yet made public. Their sources suggest the ideal candidate—both in terms of fit and affordability—remains undisclosed, with the club working quietly behind the scenes. A similar low-profile approach was taken when they secured Atalanta’s Matteo Ruggeri.
