As Memorial Day Weekend approaches, the college football recruiting season is heating up. Starting the weekend of May 31, official visits will begin, marking a critical stretch for programs across the country. Among those preparing is Virginia Tech, where head coach Brent Pry and new offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery are set to host a top target: four-star quarterback Oscar Rios.
Virginia Tech to Welcome Four-Star QB Oscar Rios
Oscar Rios, a four-star quarterback from Downey, California, is set to visit Blacksburg during the first weekend of official visits. He initially received an offer from former Hokies offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen before Bowen departed for a coaching role at Ohio State.
Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 175 pounds, Rios is ranked as the No. 10 quarterback in the 2026 class by 247Sports and the No. 22 overall prospect from California. He aims to make his college commitment by the end of June.
Rios is drawing interest from several major programs, with offers from schools such as Oklahoma State, Arizona, UCLA, Colorado, and Kentucky. His upcoming visit is a key opportunity for Montgomery and the Hokies, who are still seeking a quarterback in their 2026 recruiting class. Virginia Tech has already landed a commitment from wide receiver Carnell Warren out of South Carolina.
Currently, the Hokies’ quarterback room includes Pop Watson, Kelden Ryan, A.J. Brand, and Oklahoma State transfer Garrett Rangel — all of whom could return next season barring any transfer portal moves.
Rios is described by 247Sports’ Greg Biggins as a dual-threat quarterback with a strong arm. While Virginia Tech has promising talent already on campus, securing a commitment from Rios would mark a significant recruiting victory for Montgomery in his first year leading the Hokies’ offense.
