Borussia Dortmund have grabbed the spotlight with a significant transfer move, landing a top Chelsea star in a £40 million deal. The Bundesliga club officially announced the signing on Wednesday, ending weeks of rumors surrounding their pursuit of a marquee player ahead of the new season.
The former Premier League standout, a pivotal presence at Stamford Bridge in recent years, is expected to add experience, adaptability, and flair to Dortmund’s squad. This bold acquisition underlines the club’s intent to push closer to Bayern Munich and compete seriously for both domestic and European titles.
Borussia Dortmund Eye Permanent Move for Chelsea Midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka
Chelsea recently unveiled the signing of long-term target Jamie Gittens, but the transfer activity between the Blues and Borussia Dortmund may not be over just yet. In a potential reverse move, the Bundesliga side are reportedly interested in keeping Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Signal Iduna Park.
The 21-year-old has struggled to establish himself in Chelsea’s star-studded midfield, managing only five appearances under new head coach Enzo Maresca—none of which came in the Premier League. In contrast, his temporary spell in Germany proved more fruitful, featuring in 17 games and netting once for Dortmund.
Speaking to Metro, Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl confirmed the club’s interest in extending Chukwuemeka’s stay:
“Carney’s loan ends today. That was what we agreed with Chelsea. Now, let’s see. We will definitely have some more discussions in the next few days about his situation.
I think it was a good move from Carney to join us. Now let’s see how we manage everything.
It won’t be easy, but for sure we will try to keep him because he’s a very good player. This topic is something for the future, and right now I don’t know what will happen.”
Chukwuemeka arrived at Chelsea from Aston Villa in 2021 for £15 million and remains under contract until 2028. However, his £40 million release clause may be a sticking point, with Chelsea reportedly unwilling to entertain lower bids despite his limited role.
That said, the Blues are under pressure to offload players to meet Financial Fair Play regulations, particularly after being hit with a €31 million UEFA fine. With Chelsea’s midfield boasting the likes of Enzo Fernández, Moisés Caicedo, Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia, and Andrey Santos, the young England international appears to be surplus to requirements.
Whether through a renewed loan, a permanent deal, or an agreement with a purchase option, Chukwuemeka looks increasingly likely to continue his career away from Stamford Bridge—with Dortmund emerging as his most probable destination.
