The Atlanta Braves are no strangers to Dom Smith, having faced him numerous times in the past. Now that the veteran outfielder has opted out of his contract with the Yankees and hit free agency, the Braves might consider bringing in a familiar face to bolster their outfield depth.
With Mets fans already lobbying for Smith’s return to New York, Atlanta signing him would not only keep him away from a division rival but also potentially add some left-handed power to a group that’s been lacking pop.
Though Smith hasn’t appeared in the majors in 2025, he’s been raking in Triple-A. While success at that level doesn’t guarantee MLB production, the Yankees’ crowded lineup may have blocked his return to the big leagues. In Atlanta, the opportunity might be more realistic.
Smith Could Add Needed Depth to Braves’ Outfield
Right now, the Braves seem to be in a “why not?” phase when it comes to lineup tweaks. Their offense hasn’t been terrible, but it’s far from elite — ranking 14th in batting average, 16th in OPS, and 13th in home runs.
Smith isn’t a cure-all, nor would he be expected to play every day, but he’d give manager Brian Snitker another capable option while Ronald Acuña Jr. continues to work his way back to full strength. If Smith can replicate the league-average production he showed in 2023 and 2024, he could be a low-risk, worthwhile addition.
