The Cleveland Browns once believed Baker Mayfield would be their long-term answer at quarterback after drafting him No. 1 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. His time in Cleveland began promisingly but ended on a sour note.
After four seasons, the Browns chose to move on and traded Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers—a move that ultimately didn’t benefit the franchise. While Mayfield struggled initially, he has since found success with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, emerging as their starting quarterback and leading the team to consecutive playoff appearances with impressive stats.
Mayfield’s departure leaves Browns fans wondering what could have been had the team continued to back him. It’s possible he could have brought long-term stability and turned the Browns into contenders. That question, however, remains unanswered.
Now, there’s a growing call for Cleveland to honor Mayfield’s contributions. Xavier Crockett of Honor the Land has proposed that Mayfield be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor, especially following the recent announcement that Nick Chubb will receive that recognition.
“I believe there’s a legitimate case for Baker Mayfield to be in the Ring of Honor,” Crockett stated. “He played a major role in shaping where this team is today.”
During his Browns tenure, Mayfield completed 61.6% of his passes for 14,125 yards, 92 touchdowns, and 56 interceptions. Since joining the Buccaneers, he’s thrown for 8,544 yards, 69 touchdowns, and 26 interceptions.
At 30 years old, Mayfield still has a promising future in Tampa Bay. Despite the rocky ending with the Browns and his relatively short stint in Cleveland, his impact on the team’s recent history makes him a worthy candidate for such recognition.
With Chubb’s induction into the Ring of Honor now official, it remains to be seen whether Mayfield will receive the same acknowledgment.
