For at least another season, star pass rusher Khalil Mack will remain off the free agent market.
On Monday morning, reports surfaced that Mack and the Chargers agreed to a new one-year, $18 million contract, securing his place in Los Angeles for another season. Retaining Mack was a top priority for both head coach Jim Harbaugh and general manager Joe Hortiz, and they finalized the deal just over 48 hours before the start of the new league year.
Although Mack’s sack and tackle-for-loss numbers dipped this past season, much of that can be attributed to the Chargers’ overall defensive success. The team was among the league’s top scoring defenses and excelled at preventing opponents from converting first downs. Mack logged just 617 defensive snaps across 16 games—the lowest in any full season of his career, aside from his injury-shortened 2021 campaign.
Despite the reduced playing time, he still contributed six sacks and six tackles for loss while making a significant impact against both the run and pass. He also tallied nine pass breakups, the second-highest total of his career, trailing only the 10 he recorded in 2023.
Since joining the Chargers in 2022, Mack has amassed 163 tackles, 31 sacks, 39 tackles for loss, 21 pass breakups, nine forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries, earning a Pro Bowl nod each season.
Now, he returns for another run alongside fellow edge rushers Tuli Tuipulotu and veteran Bud Dupree.
