The Dolphins have secured the signature of Selwyn Cobbo, an out-of-favour Brisbane Broncos star, on a one-year NRL contract.
Cobbo, who has fallen out of favour under Broncos coach Michael Maguire this season and was recently demoted to reserve grade, had an uncertain future at Red Hill. The 23-year-old will now make the move to the Dolphins for the 2026 pre-season, officially joining the squad in November.
While Dolphins CEO Terry Reader initially downplayed the signing on Thursday, he confirmed the news Friday morning.
“We’ve always been focused on assembling a squad capable of becoming one of the NRL’s top teams,” Reader said. “Selwyn has already shown his class at both the Origin and NRL levels. We believe he still has a lot of untapped potential and are excited to see what he can bring to the Dolphins.”
Cobbo, a six-time Queensland Origin representative who debuted for Australia in 2023, is currently finishing the final year of a deal believed to be worth $625,000 annually. He was dropped from Brisbane’s NRL lineup after a heavy loss to Manly in May.
The Broncos, meanwhile, recently announced the signing of Melbourne Storm’s Grant Anderson and a contract extension for winger Josiah Karapani.
Broncos GM of Football Operations, Troy Thomson, praised Cobbo’s contributions.
“Selwyn is not only a top-tier player but also a great person,” said Thomson. “I’ve built a strong relationship with him both here and with the Kangaroos. We appreciate everything he’s done for the club and look forward to his efforts for the rest of the 2025 season. We wish him all the best in his next chapter.”
