The Houston Roughnecks are making it clear they’re committed to turning things around after a rough 2024 campaign.
This week, the team signed six players — five who were part of last year’s squad and one with a past connection to general manager Will Lewis. The newly signed players are:
- CB Colby Richardson
- WR Emmanuel Butler
- K J.J. Molson
- WR Carlos Carriere
- OLB J.T. Tyler
- S Markel Roby
Of the group, Carriere is the only newcomer to the Roughnecks. He previously signed a letter of intent with the San Antonio Brahmas in 2023, when Lewis was in their front office before the league merger. Carriere wrapped up his college career at Central Michigan with 45 catches for 520 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games during the 2022 season.
Three of the team’s top five defensive contributors from last year are returning. Richardson, who played in all 10 games, recorded four pass breakups — third-most on the team. Roby led the defense across the board with 58 tackles, eight pass breakups, and three interceptions. Tyler added 52 tackles, ranking third on the squad.
On offense, Butler provided steady production, catching 16 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown in 10 games. His 14.9-yard average per reception led all Roughnecks with at least 10 catches.
Molson returns after serving as the team’s primary kicker last season. He hit 15 of 18 field goals (83.3%) and booted a 62-yarder — the second-longest in the league.
So far, Houston has signed and released nearly 20 players from its 2024 roster. The Roughnecks finished the regular season at 1–9, but these recent moves show they’re serious about rebuilding.
