The Toronto Maple Leafs are retaining some organizational depth on defence.

On Tuesday, the team announced that defenceman William Villeneuve has signed a one-year, two-way contract extension.

The 23-year-old recorded 40 points (four goals, 36 assists) in 55 games for the AHL’s Toronto Marlies last season. Across 165 career AHL appearances, he has tallied 90 points (nine goals, 81 assists).

A native of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Villeneuve was selected by the Leafs in the fourth round of the 2020 NHL Draft. He previously played junior hockey with the Saint John Sea Dogs in the QMJHL, helping the team win the Memorial Cup in 2022.
