The Boston Red Sox have already made moves in free agency and the trade market to strengthen their pitching staff, signing right-hander Walker Buehler to a one-year deal and acquiring left-hander Garrett Crochet in a major trade with the Chicago White Sox.
Now, the team’s attention turns to the lineup, as chief baseball officer Craig Breslow aims to secure an impact bat to elevate Boston’s offensive potential for the 2025 season.
According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, a former MLB general manager, the Red Sox could make a big splash by signing free-agent infielder Alex Bregman, considered one of the top remaining position players on the market.
“They need a right-handed power pull hitter, and Bregman would thrive hitting to the Green Monster in left field,” Bowden wrote. “They could move Rafael Devers to first base and slot Triston Casas at DH, or they could play Bregman at second base full-time. His leadership and ability to grind out at-bats would greatly benefit this young roster. He might be the key to getting the Red Sox back to the postseason.”
Bowden also highlighted the New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, and Seattle Mariners as possible destinations for Bregman but identified the Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers as the “most likely landing spots.” However, complications with those teams could create an opportunity for Boston to swoop in.
“This could lead Bregman to consider a shorter contract with a higher annual value and opt-out clauses, allowing him to re-enter free agency as soon as next offseason or after 2026,” Bowden added.
Bregman, who turns 31 in March, won’t come cheap. The 2015 first-round pick is a two-time All-Star and World Series champion who spent nine seasons as a cornerstone for the Houston Astros. Despite some signs of regression last season, including his limited versatility—he’s primarily a third baseman and won a Gold Glove there in 2024—the Red Sox could still benefit significantly from his presence.
Bregman’s right-handed bat would address a key need for Boston while also helping reestablish a winning culture for a team integrating several young players into its roster.
