LOS ANGELES (AP) — Wide receiver Davante Adams has agreed to a two-year contract with the Los Angeles Rams, returning to his home state of California.
Adams’ deal is reportedly worth up to $46 million, positioning him as a key offensive weapon alongside Puka Nacua as the Rams move on from Super Bowl 56 MVP Cooper Kupp. He will be a primary target for quarterback Matthew Stafford.
The Jets released Adams on Tuesday, ending his brief stint in New York, where he reunited with Aaron Rodgers for 11 games. Previously, Adams and Rodgers spent eight seasons together in Green Bay before Adams was traded from the Raiders to the Jets last October.
Considered one of the NFL’s elite receivers for nearly a decade, Adams has six career 1,000-yard seasons, including five straight, and two additional seasons with 997 yards. The six-time Pro Bowler has built his success on precise route-running and strong play at the line of scrimmage rather than pure speed. Last season with the Jets, he recorded 67 catches for 854 yards and seven touchdowns, including a standout 198-yard performance against Jacksonville.
Adams’ signing fills a major need for the Rams, who are preparing to part ways with Kupp, their most reliable receiver when healthy. Kupp, 32, is under contract for two more seasons and is due a $7.5 million roster bonus next weekend, making a resolution on his future imminent.
With Adams in the fold, the Rams bolster their chances of competing for a Super Bowl. They finished the 2024 season with a 10-7 record, won the NFC West, and advanced past the wild-card round before narrowly losing to the eventual champion Philadelphia Eagles in a snowy road playoff game.
The move has already generated excitement among Adams’ new teammates. Defensive back Quentin Lake posted, “Things just got real serious” on social media, while Nacua playfully asked Adams for a Taco Bell hookup, referencing his commercial partnership with the fast-food chain.
The Rams also recently re-signed Tutu Atwell to a one-year, $10 million deal. The 2021 second-round pick has shown flashes of potential despite inconsistent playing time in Sean McVay’s offense. His new contract suggests he will serve as the team’s No. 3 receiver behind Adams and Nacua. Meanwhile, second-year receiver Jordan Whittington, who had 22 catches for 293 yards as a rookie, is expected to take on a larger role in 2025.
Over his 11-year career, Adams has amassed 957 receptions for 11,844 yards and 103 touchdowns. A Bay Area native, he played his college football at Fresno State.
