The New York Mets made a splash this offseason by signing Juan Soto to a massive 15-year, $765 million deal. However, they might not be done adding superstars just yet.
The Toronto Blue Jays could face the loss of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in free agency next offseason after failing to surround him with enough star power. To avoid losing him for nothing, the Blue Jays might consider trading him. According to Jared Bloom of Sportskeeda, the Mets could be a potential landing spot for Guerrero.
Bloom pointed to the Blue Jays’ inability to “live up to the hype” with Guerrero at the forefront as a driving force for a potential trade. The Mets may need a first baseman if Pete Alonso departs in free agency, and Guerrero, one of the best in the game, would be a logical replacement. A trade for Guerrero would make sense, but only if the Mets are confident in signing him long-term.
The risk for the Mets lies in parting with valuable prospects only to lose Guerrero in free agency. Spotrac projects his next contract to be worth 12 years and $427 million. Steve Cohen, however, has proven he’s willing to spend whatever it takes to position the Mets as World Series contenders. Adding Guerrero, especially one offseason after landing Soto, fits Cohen’s aggressive approach.
Guerrero, a four-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger, and Gold Glove winner, hit .323 with 30 home runs last season. He would represent an upgrade over Alonso, a rare feat in itself, and could further solidify the Mets’ pursuit of a championship.
