The New England Patriots parted ways with first-year head coach Jerod Mayo shortly after their final game of the season, bringing in Mike Vrabel, the ex-Tennessee Titans head coach, as his replacement.
Vrabel’s coaching staff is starting to take form, with Josh McDaniels—who had two previous tenures as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator during their dynasty years—returning to that role.
NFL insider Jeff Howe of The Athletic expressed strong approval of the move, giving it a high rating during a discussion on CLNS Media.

Josh McDaniels began his career with the Patriots in 2001 as a personnel assistant and gradually climbed the ranks, eventually becoming their offensive coordinator in 2006.
After three years in that position, McDaniels had a tough two-year run as head coach of the Denver Broncos before returning to New England in 2012, where he remained for another decade.
This time around, however, he won’t have the legendary Tom Brady or key playmakers like Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, or Wes Welker to work with. Instead, McDaniels will focus on developing young quarterback Drake Maye.
The Patriots finished 4-13 for the second consecutive year, and since Brady’s departure in 2019, they’ve only made the playoffs once. With the No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and ample salary cap space, McDaniels has the opportunity to address significant roster needs, potentially guiding the team toward improvements in the coming seasons.
