The Boston Red Sox are exploring ways to bolster their offense this offseason, with a particular focus on adding right-handed power to their lineup. One of the most prominent names in free agency is Alex Bregman, who is widely regarded as the top option on the market. It’s easy to see why, given his impressive credentials.
However, another intriguing possibility may be emerging—a slugger who isn’t currently available but could be eyeing Boston as his next destination. The Toronto Blue Jays have been working to secure an extension with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., but negotiations have reportedly stalled. If no agreement is reached, Guerrero will hit free agency next offseason.
At just 25 years old, Guerrero would be an ideal long-term addition for the Red Sox, and it appears the interest might be mutual. According to USA Today Sports’ Bob Nightengale, Guerrero “would love” to join Boston if he doesn’t re-sign with Toronto.
“This is the final year before Vladimir Guerrero and Bo Bichette leave as free agents,” Nightengale reported. “Bichette seems almost certain to depart, with little interest in returning, according to those close to him. Meanwhile, Guerrero and the Blue Jays remain at least $100 million apart, with Guerrero seeking a deal worth at least $450 million.”
Nightengale added that if Guerrero doesn’t secure an extension by spring training, he’ll likely test free agency and could be donning a Red Sox uniform in 2026. The speculation surrounding Guerrero might also explain Boston’s cautious approach toward pursuing Bregman this offseason.
Securing Guerrero would be a transformative move for the Red Sox. A potential $450 million contract for Guerrero could be viewed as a better investment than the $700+ million deal it would have taken to land Juan Soto. While rumors about Guerrero have been circulating, this marks the first significant update regarding his potential future. Keep an eye on this situation as spring training draws closer.
