Derek Carr’s sudden retirement has thrust the New Orleans Saints into one of the NFL’s most unusual quarterback competitions. With Jake Haener, Tyler Shough, and Spencer Rattler all under 26 and having thrown fewer than 300 combined NFL passes, the team is surrounded by youth and uncertainty under center.
While the inexperience adds intrigue, it could also hinder their development. Although some might suspect the Saints are embracing a rebuild to potentially land Arch Manning, the organization should focus on thoroughly evaluating the current options on the roster.
Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton recently proposed that the team add a veteran presence, specifically suggesting Super Bowl winner Carson Wentz. “The Saints should add veteran competition to challenge the young candidates,” Moton wrote, emphasizing Wentz’s strong arm and play-extending ability.
In theory, adding a seasoned quarterback to mentor the young group makes sense. However, Wentz’s leadership has been questioned in past stops, where locker room issues reportedly played a role in his downfall. Unless his time in Kansas City helped reshape his approach, he may not be the right fit.
If the Saints do go the veteran route, a more stable presence like Joe Flacco might be the better move.
