Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables clearly has a preferred profile when it comes to defensive players. Though he holds the top coaching role, Venables is widely regarded as one of the premier defensive strategists in college football over the past decade. In 2025, he’s set to take direct control of the defense again, building on a dominant 2024 unit.
When evaluating talent for his scheme, Venables prioritizes athleticism, intelligence, and versatility. He values players who can handle multiple responsibilities on the field, which is why the “cheetah” position holds such a key role in his system.
One recruit who fits that mold is Niko Jandreau, a three-star safety in the 2026 class from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona. Measuring about 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, Jandreau has earned a reputation for his agility and sharp instincts in coverage.
His recruitment is heating up, with 11 Power Four offers, including from programs like Oklahoma, USC, Arizona State, and Washington. While he has official visits lined up with Oklahoma, Washington, Iowa State, San Diego State, and Oregon State (despite not having an offer from them yet), he recently announced his top five schools: Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, Missouri, Washington, and USC.
Given his Arizona roots, proximity could give schools like USC an edge, but Oklahoma’s track record of fielding elite defenses and developing NFL-caliber talent is a compelling draw for any defensive standout.
