The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres share one of the fiercest rivalries in sports, which reached new heights during the 2024 postseason. Tensions ran high as players, fans, and coaches clashed throughout their heated playoff series. Now, this rivalry could extend into free agency. R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports recently predicted the Dodgers might snatch one of the Padres’ most valuable pitchers, star closer Tanner Scott.
Scott, who joined the Padres at the 2024 trade deadline in exchange for a significant prospect haul, is expected to command a substantial deal in free agency. Jon Heyman of the New York Post projects Scott to sign for $54 million. “Scott’s an obvious target for every contender and was linked to both the Yankees and Dodgers earlier this winter,” Anderson wrote. “The Yankees have since traded for Devin Williams, while the Dodgers have yet to address their bullpen. The Dodgers don’t lose many bidding wars, so we’ll go ahead and pencil them in.”
Landing Scott would be a natural fit for Los Angeles, as they have the resources to secure his services and currently lack a definitive closer. While Evan Phillips and Blake Treinen offer solid right-handed options, Scott’s left-handed production could provide manager Dave Roberts with greater flexibility. If the move happens, it could be a major blow to the Padres and a big win for the Dodgers.
