After choosing not to extend qualifying offers to most of their pending restricted free agents (RFAs), the Pittsburgh Penguins appear set to bring at least one of them back on a new contract.
On Tuesday, the opening day of unrestricted free agency, the Penguins re-signed forward to a one-year contract, as first reported by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.
The deal carries a $1.1 million average annual value.
Dewar, 26, was acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs at last season’s trade deadline — alongside defenseman Conor Timmins, who was later traded to Buffalo during the 2025 NHL Draft — in exchange for a fifth-round pick. Before arriving in Pittsburgh, Dewar had only three points on the season, but he recorded four goals and seven points in 17 games with the Penguins.
He is expected to slot into Pittsburgh’s bottom-six forward group next season, thanks to his solid performance in that role and on the penalty kill. Just two seasons ago, Dewar posted a 10-goal, 14-point campaign with the Minnesota Wild.
According to Josh Yohe of The Athletic, forward Philip Tomasino — another RFA the Penguins chose not to qualify — is also expected to re-sign in the near future.
