The Boston Red Sox recognize the pressing need to strengthen their bullpen, and their efforts so far this offseason have fallen short.
To date, the Red Sox have added left-handers Aroldis Chapman, a veteran seven-time All-Star, and Justin Wilson, a marginal journeyman. However, they’ve also seen Chris Martin depart to the Texas Rangers, and closer Kenley Jansen has been widely expected to leave in free agency since mid-September.
The relief pitcher market, led by All-Star Tanner Scott—reportedly seeking $20 million annually—has yet to take shape. But insiders suggest that once it does, the Red Sox are expected to play a major role.
Chris Cotillo of MassLive reported Tuesday that he anticipates the Red Sox will secure at least one high-profile reliever in free agency. Among the targets, former Philadelphia Phillies All-Star Jeff Hoffman has emerged as a key name, with the team maintaining consistent communication throughout the winter.
“Hoffman had an outstanding two seasons with Philadelphia and is arguably the best right-hander available,” Cotillo wrote. “The Red Sox have stayed in touch with his camp.”
Cotillo also noted that some teams might view Hoffman as a potential starter. If he opts for that route, Boston may not be the best fit. However, in a late-inning relief role, Hoffman would complement pitchers like Liam Hendriks, Garrett Whitlock, Chapman, and Slaten effectively.
At his best, Hoffman could become the top right-handed reliever in Boston’s bullpen, even with strong performances from Slaten and Hendriks. Over two seasons with the Phillies, Hoffman posted a stellar 2.28 ERA and 0.94 WHIP across 118 2/3 innings.
Hoffman has not revealed whether he prefers starting or relieving, but Matt Gelb of The Athletic reported he is seeking a deal comparable to the three-year, $38 million contract Clay Holmes signed with the Mets. Even if Boston uses him solely as a reliever, such a deal would be a reasonable addition to their payroll.
The reliever market is expected to gain momentum once Tanner Scott makes his decision. Should Scott sign with another team, it could pave the way for Hoffman to join the Red Sox.
