All-Star reliever has signed a three-year, $33 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, the team announced Friday, just two days after his 32nd birthday.
Hoffman had an impressive 2023 season with the NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies, finishing 3-3 with a 2.17 ERA, 10 saves, and a career-high 68 appearances. He earned his first All-Star selection in July, setting personal bests in ERA, saves, and games played. The right-hander struck out 89 batters and issued just 16 walks over 66 1/3 innings, holding opponents to a .197 average and achieving a 0.96 WHIP.
“We’re thrilled to add Jeff to our bullpen,” said Toronto general manager Ross Atkins in a press release. “His elite arsenal, strike-throwing ability, and knack for missing bats make him a valuable addition. Jeff will have the chance to close games for us this season, and his experience, competitiveness, and track record are a great fit for this team.”
Hoffman, originally drafted by the Blue Jays ninth overall in 2014 out of East Carolina, never pitched for Toronto as he was traded to Colorado the following year in a blockbuster deal that brought Troy Tulowitzki and LaTroy Hawkins to the Jays. He made his MLB debut with the Rockies in 2016 and has since played nine seasons with Colorado, Cincinnati, and Philadelphia, compiling a 23-26 record with a 4.82 ERA across 256 games, including 50 starts.
Hoffman was a standout in the 2023 National League Championship Series, pitching six scoreless innings over five appearances against Arizona. However, he struggled in the Division Series against the Mets, giving up six runs in 1 1/3 innings across three outings.
The 6-foot-5 reliever will receive a $5 million signing bonus, followed by salaries of $6 million in 2024 and $11 million in both 2025 and 2026. His contract includes up to $2 million annually in performance bonuses tied to innings pitched: $500,000 each for reaching 60, 70, 80, and 90 innings.
Hoffman expressed gratitude for his time with the Phillies, sharing a photo on Instagram with his kids and calling it “a time I will never forget.”
In a corresponding roster move, the Blue Jays designated right-hander Brett de Geus for assignment.
