The St. Louis Cardinals appear to be in rebuilding mode, and one of their star players, Nolan Arenado, might be seeking a fresh start. A potential trade with the Boston Red Sox could be in the works.
The Red Sox are one of six teams Arenado would reportedly waive his no-trade clause to join. With Boston considering shifting Rafael Devers to first base, they could use a new third baseman. Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report predicted that the Cardinals might trade Arenado to the Red Sox this offseason.
“The Red Sox are certainly a fit for Arenado in other ways, not least of which because of how his right-handed pull power would play at Fenway Park,” Rymer wrote.
Arenado, who signed an eight-year, $260 million contract with the Colorado Rockies in 2019 before being traded to the Cardinals, posted a .272 batting average with 16 home runs last season. Rymer also suggested the Cardinals might absorb part of Arenado’s contract to facilitate a trade.
Arenado’s resume includes eight All-Star appearances, five Silver Sluggers, 10 Gold Gloves, and six Platinum Gloves. Adding him would be a major boost for the Red Sox, who missed out on acquiring Juan Soto earlier this offseason. MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo indicated that Boston might even be Arenado’s top choice.
“Boston is a preferred destination — if not the preferred destination — for Arenado, a hot trade candidate who has a full no-trade clause, industry sources said Sunday,” Cotillo reported.
However, Boston’s interest in Arenado may hinge on their willingness to move Devers to first base. If the Red Sox fail to acquire Arenado or Alex Bregman, they could opt to keep Devers at third base instead.
