In Sunday’s rubber match between the Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves, Garrett Crochet turned in a dominant performance, giving up just one earned run over seven innings to lead Boston to a 3-1 victory and improve their record to 29-32. Despite the team’s sub-.500 mark, Crochet has been a standout, overpowering the Braves with 12 strikeouts and only two walks, proving his immense value.
So far in 2025, Crochet boasts a 1.98 ERA over 82 innings in 13 starts. When the Red Sox acquired him at the cost of a significant prospect haul, the big question was whether he could handle the workload of being a full-time ace on a thin pitching staff. He’s more than answered that call, earning increasing trust from manager Alex Cora — and thriving because of it.
“[Cora] told me, ‘Let’s keep going.’ I was fired up,” Crochet said via Chris Cotillo of MassLive. “I was just hoping it wasn’t for [Michael] Harris only. If you’re going to send me back out, let me go to work, and he did.”
Crochet was electric in his final inning, striking out the side in just 13 pitches in the seventh. That set the stage for relievers Greg Weissert and Aroldis Chapman to close out the win and the series.
Crochet has lived up to the hype and then some. Once seen as a short-inning arm, he’s become a true workhorse — already completing seven innings six times this season (compared to just three last year with the White Sox), including an eight-inning gem against the Orioles in April.
The Red Sox have a history of relying on lefty aces when they’re contenders, and Crochet is making his case to be the next in that line. Now, it’s up to the rest of the roster to rally around him. Boston will look to keep the momentum going when they host the Angels tonight at 7:10 PM ET.
