The Boston Red Sox have had a fascinating offseason this winter. They were heavily involved in the pursuit of superstar Juan Soto but ultimately opted not to meet the $765 million price tag required to secure him.
Since then, Boston has bolstered its starting rotation by acquiring Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler. These additions may leave free-agent pitcher Nick Pivetta as the odd man out.
Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball recently predicted that Pivetta could leave Boston and ink a $40 million deal with the rival Toronto Blue Jays.
“With top free agent starters like Corbin Burnes, Sean Manaea, and Walker Buehler off the board in this update, the starting pitching market is thinning quickly,” Finkelstein noted. “Aside from Jack Flaherty, Nick Pivetta now emerges as the best free-agent starter available for teams seeking rotation help.
“If there’s one team desperate enough to overlook the draft capital at this stage of the offseason, it’s the Toronto Blue Jays. The Jays have missed out on many marquee free agents, most of whom were tied to qualifying offers.”
The Blue Jays are under pressure to improve their roster after failing to land players like Soto, Max Fried, and Burnes. While Pivetta may not be at the same elite level, he could be a solid addition to their rotation alongside other free-agent signings. For Toronto, taking a chance on the Red Sox right-hander could be a logical move.
